Like most folks, I send out Christmas cards every year and some years I just have my kids on there and sometimes I will have our whole family on the card. Family photo time is a particular brand of torture for me. It’s tough being mom while making sure everyone is behaving and looks decent in the photo. It is also tough being the photographer for a family session. Let’s face it, there is some pressure to get that perfect shot! Try being part of the photo AND being the mom AND being the photographer. (I know plenty of photog moms are right now saying, “I KNOW. ME TOO!”) My sessions have generally ended with pouts, tears, and some folks just laying down. And you should see how the kids act.
I have actually caught myself yelling, YELLING, at my kids, “Just act natural! Smile! Put your hand down!” Sounds awesome fun, huh?
This was all before I started forcing begging Amy Ross (SoBliss photog extraordinaire) to help me out and be the photog so I can focus on getting my kids to “act natural”. I try to come up with something different and fun for our sessions and thanks to Pinterest I came up with something kooky and crazy. The idea was to have our family do something FUN. While participating in this fun activity, Amy would photograph us and hopefully catch us all smiling and laughing. And well…. acting natural. Not only was this session a complete blast, but I can see my kids gorgeous faces smiling and laughing in the way that I know they can and do when I am not pointing a camera at them. We also have a unique piece of art that will hang on my wall alongside a collage of images from this session.
I cannot thank Amy enough for capturing these images for us. Since she did such an amazing job, my card had 11 (!?) images on it and I had the toughest time narrowing down the choices for the card. For the blog, I didn’t do so well. Lots of images here.
I want to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas!!!
~Charlie
